End of the Year Awards!

May is a very exciting time of year!  We've worked so hard and now it's time to reward our accomplishments!

Our class voted, and these two girls won the title of "Sweetest Girl Classmate." (We had a tie!)
And I can say, they definitely are sweet!

Funniest boy was another title on the ballot.... and guess who won?????
Lane did, and I can say.......yes, he's pretty funny!

These are all of my students who met their AR goal!  Whoooo hoooooo!
Lane had the highest points with 111.8
That's A LOT of books!
I'm so proud of all of their efforts.  They also had an average of 80% or better!
(I think they are ready for 2nd grade)

These students had the highest averages.......
Highest Reading Average- Lane
Highest Math Average- Bayleigh
Highest Spelling Average- Ja'Niya

This award is called the "Citizenship Award."  I gave this special award to Maegan.  She is always prepared, has a GREAT attitude and always works well with others.  I'm very proud of this girl!

And we can't forget.... the "Funniest Girl."  This award went to Ja'Niya.
(We had to take the picture several times due to photo bombers in the background.  I guess you could say we have several "funnies" in our room but these students won the prize.)

Special Reader

Today, we had a special reader visit our classroom.  Lane's sister, Ally, was visiting our school and dropped in to read us a story.  The children LOVED hearing an older sibling read to the class (and I think Lane liked it too.)  Sibling is one of our Amazing words this week so what a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the word and all that goes with it!

McWane Center Field Trip

The Wednesday before Spring Break, we took a trip to the McWane Center in Birmingham!  It was great!  The exhibits are always great and the children always enjoy themselves!  We toured the Discovery Hall and also saw an IMAX film about Sharks!  The children's behavior was awesome on this day as well.  They are really getting ready for 2nd grade..... :(

We were learning about Ocean Animals that week during our Unit time..... so it was perfect to be able to experience the touch tank which contained Sting Rays and Sand Sharks.....even if a few weren't quite brave enough to touch them.....and...(I'm one of those few.)

Digging for dinosaurs that once inhabited Alabama!

I think they had too much fun...... just a few pics from the journey home.................

Dr. Seuss Week (Read Across America)

So, if you are not familiar with Read Across America week, it's pretty much a week long Birthday Bash for Dr. Seuss.  His real birthday is March 2, and we love to celebrate because of the many creative books he has brought to children! The Suess would actually be 110 years old this year.....and each and every year, my 1st graders are always disappointed to learn that he was a real person.  You really would be surprised at how many children think "The Cat in the Hat" actually wrote the books.  They think that HE is Dr. Seuss! :)

Here are just a few pics from one of the many days of our crazy week !!!!
(And disregard the date on the bottom of these pictures! The camera I picked up to use on this day had obviously not been set and I didn't realize it until I downloaded them.... Oh well...we all know it's DEFINITELY not June! :)

February

We took a trip to Birmingham Children's Theatre and boy, was it fun?!! We watched a play as they merged "Little Miss Muffet," "Little Boy Blue," and "Little Bo Peep" all into one musical act.  If you are ever looking for a fun place to visit, even in the summer, check out www.bct123.org.

DECEMBER

Did December really come and go so quickly? Wow, it always does!  We had two fabulous mystery readers last month.  Mrs. Garrett (Janiya's Mother) and Mr. Lovering (Lane's Dad)  Both did such a great job!

And a gold star for the first Dad to be a mystery reader this year!  He even brought props that went a long with his story!  (It's not just for the moms!)

Spanish

This semester we will embrace learning Spanish....oh, boy! This is a pic from our first lesson today.
